Network Check-in Summary of Responses for November 2024
The main themes that came forward in regard to program priority areas are:
Mental Health Promotion
- Focus on maternal and infant mental health, with an emphasis on perinatal mental health.
- Address mental health challenges in specific communities, such as the Low German Mennonitte and Indigenous families.
- Promote mental health support through outreach and culturally sensitive approaches.
Nutrition and Food Security
- address widespread food insecurity across various zones, with creative solutions and partnerships.
- Provide nutrition education and resources to support families, particularly those with financial barriers.
- Implement food security initiatives, including collective kitchens and budgeting education.
Parent-Child Attachment and Family Support
- Enhance parent-child engagement and attachment through positive parenting and socioemotional programming.
- Support new fathers and help older children adapt to new siblings through an attachment lens.
- Offer culturally sensitive parenting support to accommodate diverse cultural background
Community Resource Access
- Link clients to community resources and referrals to address food, housing, and settlement
- needs.
- Overcome barriers such as reliable transportation and social isolation to improve access to services.
- Support newcomers with limited access to healthcare and services.
Education and Outreach
- Provide ongoing education and resources for staff, particularly in culturally appropriate
- practices.
- Increase access to perinatal mood disorder education and lactation support.
- Ensure program accessibility by addressing immediate needs like housing and childcare.
Zone-Specific Focus Areas:
NorthWest Zone: Focus on isolation, community integration, and accessing service
East Zone: Address broader funding issues and support rural populations.
Central Zone: Promote family wellness and positive parenting.
North East Zone: Make programs accessible and culturally sensitive.
SW Zone: Emphasize mental health support and indigenous-based training.
WebConnects: Prioritize cultural teachings in early years learning and positive discipline
Challenges and Barriers
Financial Barriers: addressing the increasing financial challenges faced by families, which impact their ability to access services and resources
Transportation & Accessibility: overcoming barriers related to reliable transportation and making programs more accessible to those in need.
Cultural Sensitivity: ensuring that parenting and mental health support are culturally sensitive and inclusive.
