The Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) is leading the selection of 8-10 public health system readiness indicators leading to better accountability and health outcomes for Canadians. The chosen indicators will help improve transparency of the readiness of Canada’s public health system. This system includes local public health authorities, provincial, territorial and national public health governing bodies and other related organizations at all levels that work to meet the needs and improve the health of Canadians.

Selected indicators will measure the readiness of our public health system to meet the needs of the Canadian population for years to come. We are inviting you to share your insights around what is important to you about public health in Canada, focusing on 4 key areas:

  1. public health system financing (for example, how much is spent on a vaccination program),
  2. public health organization, governance, and workforce (for example, the number of nurses working in public health),
  3. health promotion (for example, measuring the reach of programs to support people with quitting smoking, or supporting new parents during the post-partum period)
  4. emergency preparedness (for example, how prepared we are to deal with a pandemic or environmental emergency).

Your insights will help inform the process of selecting the indicators best suited to measure the readiness of Canada’s public health system.
