The copious research on formal help-seeking of women abused by intimate partners rarely narrows to counselling services. An analysis of data from the Healing Journey project examined the opinions of 660 Canadian women from the prairie provinces about their use and impressions of several different forms of counseling such as shelter-based, general counselling, couples counselling, spiritual and counselling, and Indigenous approaches. Assessment and practice implications will be described.

Learning Objectives

This Webinar will:

  • Review different types of counselling offered to women abused by intimate partners.
  • Cover the pros and cons of these counselling approaches as described by 660 women who sought counselling support for IPV.
  • Describe the implications of the women’s views on assessment and counselling approaches.
